The mysterious Third Eye of the subtle body is identified with the pineal gland of the physical body.  The pineal gland is so named because it is shaped like a pine cone.  Many Buddha Murtis have a pine shaped head. Depictions of Shiva also have the pile of dreadlocks upon His head rise in a pine cone shape.
